Best Cars to Take to a Drive-In Cinema

16 November 2020 AutoMarket, Tips & Advice

Like many industries, cinemas have taken a big hit since the outbreak of COVID-19. Large crowds in close proximity within a closed space? It will be a long time before that’s commonplace again. Many countries have shut their cinemas and theatres altogether, while others are operating under limited capacities.

Luckily, however, drive-in cinemas have made a huge comeback these past few years. There’s something charmingly retro about them which appeals to so many; almost like a 1950s time warp. Demand for drive-in movies has soared in Australia, with many popping up all over the country during the warmer months. The best part is that drive-ins are much less risky than indoor cinemas in today’s climate. Thanks to the wide open space and the ability to watch from the safety of our own car, we can enjoy a flick on the big screen while remaining socially distanced.

Which reminds us, cars are an instrumental aspect of the drive-in cinema experience. To make the most of it, you’ll need a nice set of wheels to sit back in. Here are our top picks.

1. Volvo XC60

Most modern drive-in cinemas will broadcast the film’s audio via your car radio. Do it justice with a quality sound system, such as that of the Volvo XC60. This car’s Bowers & Wilkins audio setup has plenty of connectivity options, with speakers on the front seat as well as around the cabin for a surround sound experience. It’s also extremely comfortable and spacious, so you can sit back and relax with your popcorn without having to shift around and change your position every few minutes.

2. 1960 Cadillac deVille Coupe

We’re going very old school with this one. But nothing screams drive-in cinema like a Cadillac. A Cadillac coupe is sure to impress any date, and its vintage, authentic style will look just right parked in front of the big screen. Its single front bench and fixed roof provide lots of privacy too for added romance.

3. Bentley Continental GT Convertible

Balmy summer nights call for a convertible, and our current favourite is the Bentley Continental GT. Let the warm breeze blow gently on your skin as you enjoy a movie with friends from the comfort of your four-seater ride. You’ll have a much better view of the screen, too. If you happen to get caught in a shower, don’t panic. The Bentley’s fabric roof folds up in seconds.

4. Volkswagen Touran

If you’re heading to the movies with the kids in tow, we love the Volkswagen Touran. Its seven-seater capacity means there’s plenty of space for everyone without feeling cramped. But the pièce de résistance is its rear airline style tables at the back of each seat so you can bring plenty of snacks to munch on while your eyes are glued to the screen. Another bonus is that at the touch of the button, the front half of the roof can be retracted to let in some fresh air and sunshine.

5. BMW X7

For a truly luxurious drive-in cinema experience, look no further than the BMW X7. Its lush seven seat interior offers space and sublime comfort for big groups. The high-quality leather against contrasting decorative elements creates an incredible atmosphere that enhances the viewing experience tenfold. But most importantly, its elevated height gives you the ideal vantage point so you don’t have to awkwardly crane your neck to see the screen properly.

6. Chrysler Pacifica

Movie running times tend to reach almost two hours, so you need a car that you’re happy to sit in for that long. The Chrysler Pacifica will keep you cosy and comfortable ‘til the credits. Roomy with plush interior, this seven-seater is perfect for you and your family, or a gang of close buddies. Its Stow n’ Go seats can also be folded away if you want to put your feet up.

Have we got you in the mood for a night at the movies? Whatever car you have, it makes for a fun, different activity and is a great way to spend quality time with your loved ones. A beautiful car to enjoy the experience in is the cherry on top.
